Boudoir Safety
Boudoir photo shoots are all about empowerment and self-expression, but ensuring your safety and comfort is crucial. While most boudoir photographers are professional and respectful, it’s always smart to take precautions. Here are some practical tips to help you feel confident, safe, and in control during your boudoir session.
1. Do Your Research
When choosing a photographer, don’t just focus on their style—take the time to investigate their reputation. One great resource is the Minnesota Model Safety Group on Facebook (here). You can quickly become a member and find information about photographers with a history of misconduct. If your chosen photographer has a clean record, that’s a great first step!
Another way to stay safe is by messaging clients tagged in the photographer’s Instagram posts. It’s common for clients or models to ask each other about their experiences, so don’t be shy about sending a quick message or posting on that model safety page to get a character reference. You can message anyone tagged in my Instagram posts and they will be happy to share their experience!
2. Trust Your Gut During the Consultation
A consultation should always be part of the process. Consults are your chance to get a sense of a photographer’s professionalism. If they’re reluctant to meet or talk beforehand, consider it a red flag.
During the consultation, be sure to ask if it’s okay to bring a friend or partner for added support. Professional boudoir photographers have no problem with this, and having someone with you can help prevent uncomfortable situations.
3. Red Flags to Watch For
While there are many fantastic male boudoir photographers, it’s smart to be extra cautious when booking a shoot with one. Check client reviews and ask for references. If the deal seems too good to be true or if the photographer is vague about their experience, these are clear boudoir photographer red flags.
Other boudoir safety red flags I’ve seen are:
-Asks for a revealing image of you first before booking
-Over-sexual photography
-Poor communication
-Minimal boudoir experience
-Reaches out to you online to book a shoot despite not being a model
-features themselves in the background of client’s images (yes, seriously)
-Tells you he’ll give you a cheaper price because you’re “so beautiful”
-Comments on your physical appearance
Run, don’t walk in the other direction!
Remember, your intuition is a powerful tool—if something feels off, it’s okay to walk away and find another photographer who makes you feel safe. You deserve that at the VERY LEAST!
4. Consent and Communication Are Key
Clear communication is a must in boudoir photography. Your photographer may offer to make hands-on adjustments, like fixing your hair or adjusting your pose, but they should always ask for your consent before doing so. If you’re not comfortable with physical adjustments, don’t hesitate to request verbal instructions instead.
Don’t be afraid to voice your opinion if a pose or concept feels wrong to you. A good photographer will always respect your preferences and adjust accordingly.
5. Outfits and Nudity Should Be Your Decision
During your boudoir shoot, your comfort is the priority. A photographer should never pressure you to wear a certain outfit or take off more clothing than you’re comfortable with. If you feel any pressure to push your boundaries, that’s a clear sign to protect yourself and walk away from the session.
6. Privacy and Image Sharing
One of the most important aspects of boudoir photo shoot safety is protecting your privacy. A professional photographer should always ask for permission before sharing your images on Instagram, their website, in marketing materials, et cetera. If you’re not comfortable with your photos being posted, that’s completely normal! In fact, about 50% of my clients choose to keep their images private.
In my studio, this is clearly outlined in the contract to ensure that my clients feel secure in knowing their images won’t be shared without their consent. If your photographer doesn’t use contracts, be sure you get it in writing (preferably via email) that your images will remain private. This simple step can protect you from having your images shared against your wishes.
